Engineer, Safety Intern

The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) has an opening for a Safety Engineer Intern with our Safety & Security Department, located in Lansing, MI.

Position Summary:

Job Type: Full-Time Summer Internship

Dates: May 06, 2024 - August 02, 2024

Pay Rate: $21.00 per hour.

The Intern will be vital in assisting the department with project work, specifically labeling potential Arc Flash hazards in BWL facilities.  The Intern will assist Security in performing physical security inspections of our BWL facilities.  The Safety and Security Intern at our offices will learn from, and be supervised by, a mentor of the Safety and Security Department. 


Essential Functions:

Wise Road Arc Flash Label Replacement.

REO Arc Flash Label Replacement.

Safety Presentation at Safety Meeting.

Using GIS and Adept to verify electrical production.

Reading one-line diagrams for on-the-job-training.

Assist and conduct on-site safety inspections.

  • Document and report findings of safety inspections.
  • Utilizes applicable software to complete job assignments.
  • Performs field observations and measurements to assess electrical arc flash and shock hazards and develops potential corrective actions.
  • Assists with the evaluation of compliance with standards for electric power generation, transmission, and distribution, as well as safety-related electric work practices as required.
  • Assists with plant and area safety inspections as required.
  • Assists with safety incident investigations and job hazard analyses as required.
  • Participates in BWL Safety Committee and department safety advisory committee meetings as required.
  • Attends training for safety awareness or skills improvement as required by supervisor, BWL or governmental agency such as MIOSHA.
  • Follows the BWL Safety Manual and wears required personal protective equipment as necessary.
  • Expected to comply with all BWL policies and work rules.
  • Predictable and reliable attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.


Job Specifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited educational institution with a focus of Engineering, Occupational Health, and Safety, with junior or senior status during the summer of 2024.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.


Physical Requirements / Working Conditions:

  • Employees are required to follow the BWL Safety Manual and wear required personal protective equipment, adhere to BWL safety rules and regulations, attend all training for safety awareness or skills improvement as required by supervisor, BWL, or governmental agency such as MIOSHA.
  • Normal office and occasional field work.
  • Field conditions may include potential for heat, cold, dust, and/or noise.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus, especially due to concentration on a computer screen and small numbers.
  • Must successfully complete a background check, a substance screening and a physical (if applicable).
